Artistic Statement

As a striving artist in society, I have many goals in which I want myself, as well as my work to achieve. My mission as a performer and educator in dance is to bring a new lens for people to see the world through. I want to illustrate a purpose and understanding of questions that we may ponder upon in our daily lives. By creating a movement that is authentic and raw for myself and the human eye, is a way to connect and communicate with people in a deeper and more resonating way. I see myself as an author and storyteller to my own life experiences. To connect with people, I must allow my whole self to be seen. I want my artistry to speak volumes on how I see the world around me and the endless possibilities that are present around us all. The movement that brings hope and joy for an individual in the audience is a goal I yearn for.  I want to address the importance of “being”. Being here. Being present. Being unapologetically myself. Being honest.

Dance has moved me through each struggle in my life and has opened doors with a new opportunity and understanding. I want my dancing and work to move and inevitably impact people. I want the viewers to leave each performance learning, feeling, and thinking. I see my life and who I am through my work. From a simple glare to the most sequential full-bodied movement, I want to make people feel the way I feel. I want each movement to hold its meaning and value. While moving through space and experiencing my body give in to its most vulnerable state, I allow my emotions to take precedence. Dance has been that constant reminder that I am beautifully imperfect. It has shown me both good and evil. It has pushed me to my breaking point just as quickly as it pulled me back in to comfort me. It has allowed me to be the person I choose to be in this world. It proves to me each day, purpose.

As an educator, while every dance class is a different experience from the next, I strive for each experience to be alive and living for all students. I want individuals to feel comfort, passion, and drive in a way that I do for dance. As my role as an educator, I want to frame an environment that is encouraging, safe, and positive for all students. I want people to open their eyes to the world and utilize art as a way to navigate through life. I want to encourage and demonstrate that art is not just something to admire from the side, but an entity to take hold of wholeheartedly.
